Pyrenees Hay Processors is a farmer based co-operative that was set up to value add local produce and save farmers freight in carting their Product to other processors. Eventually it was hoped that there would be a return on capital invested and better prices paid to the growers.

PHPC brings oaten hay into the processing plant from a radius of about 100km of Avoca (which is two hours north west of Melbourne). The hay is stored in sheds on site and then put through the processing plant.

Processing
The processing consists of a teaser pulling the bales apart and re-baling the loose product into a conventional small bale, with adjustable weights according to which country the product is being exported to. The bale then travels along a conveyor belt and into the hydraulic compactor. The bales are then compacted to a size of roughly 2'x2'x2.5'. The bales are stacked in a pallet shape and then wrapped in cling film plastic wrap. These packs are then put straight into a container on site. The containers are fumigated on site and then trucked to Melbourne.

 Product
The majority of our product is sold to feed mills, where they incorporate it into a TMR, which is a Total Maintenance Ration. The TMR is then bagged and sold predominantly to dairy farms. Our product so far has been sold into Japan and South Korea.
